You need to register with a doctor BEFORE you can receive treatment. To register you need proof of your local address and student ID. Please register soon. Do NOT wait until you are ill.

If you are staying with a local Host Family they will be able to recommend a nearby doctor.

Registration is a simple process: you just need to go to the Surgery with proof of your address and that you are a student at College. Female students can ask to be registered with a female doctor. You will receive a Medical Card in the post a week or two later. If you then need to see a doctor, ring the Surgery for an appointment.

There is no payment for an appointment to see a doctor, eye-tests, for any tests or X-rays you may need; or for any hospital treatment. However, you may have to pay for dental treatment. A list of dental practices is available from the NHS 24 website.

An EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) is useful and this can be obtained from your country’s health authority.
