Students Can't Dodge Raising Charity Cash
Release date: 18/02/2010
Sports students at Dundee College proved they really can have a lot of balls in the air at any one time when they staged a series of tournaments involving over 100 students.
As part of their course work, students on the HND sports coaching with sports development programme have to organise a sporting event, from inception through to completion, including arranging the sports, attracting sponsorship and turning a profit – which has to go to charity.
James Ross (21), Sheryl Bibby (21), Martin Preuss (21), all Perth; Michael Connelly (21), Chris Hassan (22), both Dundee; Gary MacDonald (21), Wick; and Andrew Millar (19), Kirriemuir organised Tri-Ball, which comprised a dodgeball tournament, a basketball tournament and a series of ball-based events held in the swimming pool.
Over 100 students took part, splitting into teams of five for both the basketball tourney and the dodgeball events which are took place in four separate sports halls at the Gardyne Campus.
After the gym-based event the students piled into the pool for a variety of events including relay races using a ball as baton.
The event closed with a trophy ceremony and a series of raffles.
The group raised money to buy the trophies by holding a bikini-clad car-wash – men only! Any extra cash was destined for the Radio Tay charity, Cash for Kids.
“With so many teams taking part it was a real challenge to co-ordinate everything and ensure the day goes smoothly,” said James.
“Everyone has been very supportive, however, especially when they realised we were raising money for local charity Cash of Kids”
