Dundee College staff might have been guilty of ‘raisin’ the baking stakes with the inaugural Dundee Junior Baker of the Year - Great Scone Challenge.
Schools across the city were invited to nominate junior baker finalists to roll up to Dundee College training bakery and roll out some dough in the competition which was sponsored by the Baker Trade of Dundee in conjunction with the Dundee Flower and Food Festival.
Five pupils from S1 and S2 turned up the heat in the bake-off which took place at the Kingsway Campus on Friday, June 1.
Elysse Crichton, Baldragon Academy, Dundee High School’s Robyn Davidson, Rebecca Laxy, of Morgan Academy, Grove Academy’s Lauren Walker and Anna Robertson of St John’s High School were the pupils cooking on gas and, as finalists, had already guaranteed an invite to the Dundee Flower and Food Festival which runs at Camperdown Park from Friday-Sunday, August 31-September 2.
Rebecca proved ‘Top Bun’ on the day and, as well as winning £50, the 13-year-old was invited to meet one of this year’s Festival celebrity chefs.
There were also cash prizes of £20 for the runner up and £10 third-placed participant.
The pupils were given one hour to prepare a batch of four sweet or savoury scones and judges on the day were Martin Goodfellow and Iain Murray of the Baker Trade of Dundee.
