National First for Jannies

Two Perth janitors are the first people in Scotland to gain SVQ 2: facilities services.
Colin Allan and Craig Macleod were part of a pilot programme run by Dundee College and Perth & Kinross Council.
For the past six months, both Colin and Craig have been assessed by development officer Alison Hamon of Dundee College business and administration team.
This was the first training undertaken by Perth resident Colin since completing a carpentry course in 2001.
“I am very happy to be one of the first students to achieve this award and grateful to have been given the opportunity to be involved in a great course that is very relevant to the work we do,” said the Perth Grammer School janitor.
This sentiment was echoed by Craig, who last took part in formal education nearly 15 years ago when he gained HND mechatronics.
“I really enjoyed this course and found that it covers all aspects of the job I do,” commented the Tulloch resident.
“It also had the right level of support to help me through it and I feel very lucky to of been one of the first to have completed it.”
Craig currently works at North Muirton and Balhousie Primary Schools.
“SVQs are work-based awards and to gain this qualification, as well as being observed at work, Colin and Craig took part in professional discussions, provided knowledge statements and showed evidence of their expertise,” said Alison.
“All of this work-based evidence, along with witness testimonies from senior members of staff were collated over the six-month period demonstrating that Colin and Craig reached a national standard.”
