Transition to Employment

April 2010 - March 2011

The Transitions into Employment, project aims to develop the skills and behaviours and attitudes across a wide range of individuals that will enable them to be able to find, secure and sustain employment. The project aims to develop the employability skills of approximately 200 learners. These are across a range of categories and ages, but mainly 16-19 year olds, and covering those with a range of personal barriers that would be a distinct disadvantage to securing employment.
For a lot of our learners, these are significant barriers to overcome and can be a major challenge in preparing for a world of potential employment.

Transitions, will allow individual learners a chance to increase their own self awareness, knowledge of themselves (and their ability to sell themselves both on paper and face to face) and increase their understanding of the labour market and the work place itself.

Dundee College will also be able to provide additional support (in specific areas) for those identified as requiring it –e.g. - additional support in learning, core skills, or personal effectiveness areas.

The college can offer exposure and experience in a wide range of vocational and non vocational areas and individuals have to interact with a wide range of other students, staff and professionals from a range of backgrounds, which can also increase their own awareness of themselves and of other opportunities.

Also the college can offer additional support through the wide range of resources used for all college learners: these include both face to face support (guidance/careers) and online resources such as the “Employment Driver “. The college also has and uses visiting speakers and external partners who come into college to support development and learners. Our in-house jobs4U site advertises work related opportunities to learners. We also work closely with the Job broker partners within the pipeline to help our learners make an effective and appropriate transition into employment.

The college also works with a range of other partners and external agencies and expertise to ensure that individuals get all the information, and opportunities  possible to help them make a successful transition into employment 9 and to able to sustain it.

Some individuals will work towards achieving accredited SQA units in Employability skills areas, as part of their project input. However, all learners identified will have employability skills input accredited or otherwise.

Input varies to suit the appropriate needs and context of the learners in the project. However, each identified learner will be supported in developing a range of skills necessary to enable them to make an effective transition towards sustainable employment.  Most learners will also see an increase in their confidence levels as part of their development.

The college works closely with other local pipeline partners and agencies to support a wide range of learners during and on completing their time at college, to improve their ability to take up any local opportunities that are appropriate and help the needs of the local economy.
