Educational Maintenance Allowances (EMA) were launched across Scotland in August 2005 to provide financial support to young people from low income families.
To be eligible for an EMA you must be under 18 on the start date of your course and have a signed Learning Agreement that must be signed by both you and a member of college staff. Payments can only start once this Learning Agreement has been returned to us.
Payments are only made when you have 100% weekly attendance.
Please refer to the Guidance Notes on Reporting of Absences which are issued with your award notice as this will let you know what action you should take should you be absent from any of your classes.
*earlier due to holidays
Please note: This listing is for information only. You should refer to your "Letter of Award" which identifies period for which payment may be made.
There is no payment entitlement for holiday weeks.
Students who are 18 and over on the start date of their course, have settled status in the UK, have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years and are resident in Scotland from the start date of their course are eligible to apply for a Further Education Bursary.
If you are eligible your award covers a maintenance allowance, travel expenses (if you live outwith a 2 mile radius of the campus you attend) and an allowance for books/equipment.
Full payment of your instalments are only made when you have 90% weekly attendance. Your payments are automatically held if your attendance falls below a weekly attendance of 75%.
Payments are made on the following Fridays for the previous two weeks:
In accepting the terms and conditions of any award made, you are undertaking to repay on demand, any overpayments which may, for any reason, be made to you. Therefore if you withdraw from your college course you must tell us as soon as possible so that you do not receive bursary instalments that you were not entitled to.
Please refer to the Guidance Notes on Reporting of Absences which are issued with your award notice as this will let you know what action you should take should you be absent from any of your classes.
Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) is an agency of the Scottish Government which gives financial support to all eligible students doing a course of higher education in the UK.
New students - apply as early as you can. Do not wait for exam results or a firm offer. If you don't get on the course you want, you can easily change or cancel your application by giving SAAS a call.
Continuing students - you must apply every year for your funding.
All students - SAAS aim to have your funding in place at the start of your course for all correctly completed applications received before 30 June 2011.

We have a number of ways that you can represent your views on your programme and college services. You can become a:
This is an important role and it involves you representing the views of your class mates at things like Programme Team meetings which take place twice yearly.
This is a new role this year and we want to recruit around 30-40 students to take on this role. They will work with the Class Reps and ensure that feedback from each class is recorded and discussed where appropriate, with the Students’ Association. We want your views to produce positive actions and these reps will take common issues that may affect a number of classes and represent them to the Students’ Association.
This role gives you the opportunity to become a member of one of the College’s Standing Committees – for example Customer Care, Environment, Health & Safety to name a few. You will work with the Lead Reps and ensure the feedback is recorded at the Student Executive Forum and reported to the committees for action. You will be involved in committee decisions and represent student views and interests across the college.
The forum consists of the Committee Reps and the Student President.
For info, committee remits, nomination forms and election instructions see the Students’ Association Blackboard page.
The Students’ Association works very closely with Learner Services to provide Welfare & Support information to all students. We have links with a number of agencies and charitable organisations in Dundee and can provide information or referrals as appropriate.
Information can be found around campus on notice boards, at the Student Association Information Points and on our Blackboard page. You can also drop in to the office and speak with a member of staff.
We cover areas such as: finance, budgeting, travel, health (sexual, mental & general health issues), fitness, lifestyle, health & safety, equality & diversity and personal welfare and also provide support to students in regard to academic and disciplinary issues.
It is important to remember that whatever your needs, the Association is here to support you, and you can talk to us in confidence.
