Modern Apprenticeship Initiative

For those aged 16 or over, apprenticeships give the chance of paid employment and the chance to train for jobs at various levels. MAs are a way of gaining skills and qualifications that will help to start or develop a career without having to study full-time, and are available across a wide range of industries.

All MA frameworks are developed by the industry / sector in which they will be implemented therefore covers all the skills required at various levels. A Modern Apprenticeship is specific to its industry but will normally comprise 3 components:

  • Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) at Level 3
  • Core Skills (Communication, Numeracy, IT, Working with Others and Problem Solving)
  • Additional Components may include additional units from another SVQ, industry-specific qualifications or other qualifications such as Higher National (HN) units
